One Bag, Three Outfits

Hello again!

Time for a slightly different type of post.

I recently became aware of an amazing blogger competition that StreetHub are currently hosting.

If you haven't heard of StreetHub before here is little recap from their website:

I think it's a really great idea to help promote local independent designers and boutiques. I hope to see them branch out to Edinburgh and Glasgow! 

So onto the competition!

StreetHub and Caliber got together to set up this blogger based challenge. Everyone taking part was sent an item from the StreetHub website and had to write up a post showing how they used it. Simple and as fun as that.

I was very excited to receive the ridiculously gorgeous Disaster Designs - All Things Beautiful Bag. I have been lusting after this style of bag for a while so I was so happy when it arrived. 

I'm someone who just loves a good old book. I love the feel of the paper, the smell of the pages and just generally that vintage look they have.

 So to have a bag that resembles that is just wonderful to me. The day I received this was actually just before my Birthday, which was perfect timing. I knew it had to take part in my outfit. Infact it ended up getting involved in three outfits over that weekend. So I thought I would share with you my three different ways of rocking this bag!

LOOK #1

My first look was a very causal one. I was actually on my way to find an outfit for the nighttime. I just love leaving things to last minute of course...

 I'm normally someone who carries a very big handbag, which is really good for keeping lots of stuff in but sometimes, especially when going shopping, you don't want to have to drag a heavy bag around. So my new one was perfect. Big enough to keep my phone, purse etc in but without making me feel like my arm is about to fall off. 

I kept the rest of the look fairly simple. As you can see it's really all about the bag and the coat for this outfit!

So after two days searching and several melt downs, I finally found an outfit for my birthday night out. I never in a million years thought I would go for a jumpsuit. As I have mentioned before I'm not mega confident with my figure. I've only recently tried to experiment with wearing jeans and trousers more. I just fell in love with this jumpsuit, it actually fit me and was so comfy!

Now as you probably have noticed, I'm not a massive fan of wearing too many colours. My heart belongs to monochrome but I do like to do something different with my accessories. This bag was such perfect for this simple outfit. Against all the black, it just popped! 

One of the best things about this bag is you can use it as a clutch or pop on the strap. Personally I love a clutch but find myself paranoid I will lose it. So the strap was the safer option for me.

Now first things first... this was the day after my night out. Hence the slight rough looking face on me. When I purchased my jumpsuit, I also fell in love with these gorgeous trousers from New Look. Pairing them with simple polo neck and this fabulous duster coat (can you believe it's from Primark?!) just gives it all a very chic look. Good for when you are feeling the very opposite of chic..

Like before, I love how the bag works with very simple colours. I feel it just adds a little twist to it all. Plus I was loving how the green went with my hair colour. Who says green and orange do work together!?

So there you have it. One Bag, Three Outfits!

It's all about the fun jumpers!

Hello again!

Winter is coming...

Well technically it is already here but I couldn't resist. The days are darker, the temperature has dropped and drinking warm alcohol during the day is totally acceptable. Yes winter is truly here and this means it's time to get cosy!

I'm actually a big fan of winter fashion. For someone who is a little self conscious, summer isn't a great time of the year for me. Bare legs and vests are not my favourites. I love being able to wear thick tights, cute hats, warm coats and most importantly a good jumper.

So for this post I'm going to share with you a recent 'wintery' OOTD and some jumpers that I am seriously lusting after.

 As soon as I saw this jumper in H&M I knew it had to be mine. It has my favourite things on it, pizza, fries and hot dogs! It's more of a sweatshirt type of material so it's not exactly the warmest thing around, so I paired it with a simple white shirt. 

I've said it before but I'm not a massive fan of jeans but I do love a simple black skinny. The fact that this old pair still fit me is a shock really! 

(They may have cut the circulation off slightly in my legs mind you)

After I wore this outfit, I decided I need to get more fun jumpers to jazz up my wardrobe. So here are a few amazing ones I've found in my search!

I found so much more and could go on forever but that was selection of some of my favourites. I especially love the Street Fighter one. I may have to add it to my Christmas list!

Finding my 'Boot Tribe' with DUO

Hello again!

Last month I got a very exciting email. One of those emails that you read back just to make sure you got it all. I was getting to pop along to the DUO shop in Edinburgh (Fitting Rooms they call them).

I had previously never really seen much of what DUO offer but I was definitely excited to go along and find out more.

The DUO brand was born in 1974 in Bath with their first collection of Italian made shoes. Since then they have opened up three other stores in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. They have became a brand known for their quality and diverse range. Winning several awards and lauching their website into countries across Europe. 

One of the most exciting things I learned about DUO was the massive range in sizes. They offer up to 21 calf sizes in boots and shoes in 3 widths.

On entering the shop, we were greeted by the lovely PR ladies from Octane Communication Studio and the amazing shop stuff from the Edinburgh branch of DUO. The shop is just gorgeous inside. Floral walls, massive mirrors, chandeliers and most importantly lots of boots!

Also for us bloggers, there was lots of food and fizz on offer for us. I made friends pretty quickly with the cheese bread stick things. In fact I may have consumed most of them...

I miss those cheese sticks. 

After learning all about DUO, we got to find out what boot tribe we are apart of. The choices were ankle, knee high or over the knee!
The most amazing part of the evening was the fact once we found our dream boot, we would get them sent out to us free of charge. How amazing is that?  I felt like a right lucky lady indeed.

Before the event, I had a little nosy at the website and had a good idea what I was looking out for.
I think it's safe to say that I am apart of the Ankle boot tribe. You just can't go wrong with them! I was slightly temped by the idea of a Over The Knee but sadly I lack the confidence to go for that right now.

Us blogging ladies do enjoy a glass of fizz!

Massive mirrors are the best

I thought finding my boot of choice would be easily but alas not! They have so many ankle boots on offer, I was a bit like a child in a sweetie shop.
There comes a moment in your life when you find the one and just know it. Be that a partner, a handbag, a job...
Well I had my 'the one' boot moment in the form of these gorgeous bad boys:

We even had tags to clip on the boots with our blog headers!

I just fell in love with them instantly. These are called Sanna and they are just fabulous.
I'm not great with heels at all so for a second I was a little worried that they might be bad for my little feet but due to the platform sole and chunky heel, they feel like a dream. It's nice to find a pair of shoes that give me height but don't have me almost crying in pain.

The staff were just fantastic in the shop. There was a good few of us there and they made sure we all got help to find the perfect pair of boots. I was really impressed by the service we all received. Since I went for ankle boots, I didn't need a calf measuring but I am now intrigued to how that all goes. Maybe next time I am on a hunt for new boots, I may be brave enough to go for something a little different!

I had such an amazing evening and I was the happiest woman ever when my boots arrived a week after. I went to the Metropolitan Fashion Show event that night, so of course they came along with me. I can't wait to wear them to nights out during December. Infact I don't think they will ever leave my feet.

I will need to get a proper OOTD photo with my boots!

Edinburgh Dungeons

Hello!

I had planned for this post to go live in October but sadly things got a little hectic and this did not happen. Better late then never though eh?

So last month, my blog was based around all things spooky. So in keeping with that theme I was invited to have a little day out at the Edinburgh Dungeons. (aka the day I realised that I am a massive chicken)

Yes, big old Emily who has spent the full month watching horror films and mostly going on about how much they don't scare me, ended up screeching like a banshee.

I had visited the dungeons before when I was younger and going through my 'goth' phase. So naturally I loved it then. Going back as an adult was a very different experience for me.

During the month of October Burke was back at the Edinburgh Dungeons!

Here is a little bit about what the Edinburgh Dungeons actually is from their website:

The Edinburgh Dungeon brings together an amazing cast of theatrical actors, special effects, stages, scenes and rides in a truly unique and exciting walkthrough experience that you see, hear, touch, smell and feel. It’s hilarious fun and it’s sometimes a bit scary.

• 11 actor led shows with the finest and funniest of Scottish acting talent

The Edinburgh Dungeon is an 80 minute journey through 1000 years of Scotland 's horrible history. It's a fully themed experience. That means 360° sets, full on authenticity and theatrical storytelling. Believe us, it's better than a sightseeing or boring museum tour of Edinburgh.

 I'm someone that enjoys learning about the dark side of famous cities (blame my inner goth) so the Dungeons is right up my street.

They have several different attractions at The Dungeons. It starts off with your visit to The Judge. I got accused of crimes against fashion due to my 'wig' like hair. Damn you ginger fringe!

After that you get to meet The Torturer then it's off on a boat to uncover the lair of the infamous Sawney Bean clan. This part was bloody terrifying for me. It's in complete darkness, you hear creepy child like noises, things are touching you from above. Everything that creeps me out in life. I think I said several times to Sam that I wanted off the boat.

After all that creepiness you go to the Anatomy Theater and learn all about the grisly murders conducted by Burke and Hare. Much more interesting and fun than that awful film that came out in 2010. Sorry Simon Pegg.

At one point you end up in a graveyard. Without giving too much away, I believe I made several sequel like noises and may have slipped out a bad word.

There is also a part called Streets Of Sorrow, which I believe is a newer attraction. I don't recall it from that last time I went to the dungeons. You learn all about what life in 17th century Edinburgh was like during the plague. At one point I thought the plague doctor was going to actually pop about but sadly not. If you don't know what a plague doctor looks likes, then here you go:

As much as they creep the hell out of me, it would have been fun for someone to jump out dressed as one. My only criticism really!

At the end of the Dungeons, there is a finale little ride.
Look, I'm not a fan of rides. I've never even been on a proper roller coaster but after being a big chicken, I decided to try be brave.
Again without giving too much away, the ride I am talking about is one of those drop things. The whole point is to get that feeling of free falling. It ties into being executed by hanging.

I did however get a little photo of Sam and I before we braved the dungeons.

I really enjoyed our little day out in the Dungeons. It's a lot of fun and all the actors involved are fantastic. I actually think I would like to visit more Dungeons attractions in over cities. I've heard the York one is supposed to be really good.

If you like to learn about the darker side of history, then I highly recommend you check out the Dungeons. Just don't be a complete wimp like I was!

Online No One Can Hear You Scream: Week Four

Hello!

So yes, October is over but I still have one last week of my 'Online No One Can Hear You Scream' series left to share with you.

If you have seen my previous posts, you will know for the whole of October I have been watching loads of horror films and doing little reviews on them.

I've really enjoyed doing these posts, even if at times I've sadly not got them up in time. 

So here we go, my last horror film week!

The Blair Witch Project

•  Year Released: 1999
• Director: Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sanchez
• Starring: Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, Joshua Leonard

Three student filmmakers set out to Burkittsville, Maryland to make a documentary about the urban legend of The Blair Witch. After camping in the woods, they soon after disappear. A year later their footage has been found.

Everyone probably will know this film by now. It was massive in 1999!

Personally, I will never really understand the hype that surrounded this film. Saying that even know it's not the first 'found footage' style of film, I do think it ended up inspiring a lot of the films we have. For better or worse...

 

It's a slow one that is for sure and personally it just never gets scary for me. The ending gets pretty darn close to it but sadly it just doesn't leave you very satisfied. It's also one of those films where you just struggle to really care about the characters. They spend so much of the film whining and moaning that you may end up rooting for the 'bad guy'. Whatever that bad guy actually was. 

 

Don't get me wrong, it's a highly watchable film. I enjoy the shaky camera work and the fact you don't ever actually see what is 'stalking' them, which is effective but after it I felt a bit, well, meh over the whole thing. 

 

It's a film that could have been great. The story behind it all is a disturbing one but sadly I just found myself frustrated by the whole thing. It really only gets good at the end (and I'm someone who likes a slow build up)

The Babadook

• Year Released: 2014
• Director: Jennifer Kent
• Starring: Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall

 

   Since the death of her husband, a mother has had to bring up her son who seems to be having behavioral problems and eventually she has to take him out of school. After reading him a pop up book that is not what it seems, she finds herself being haunted by a sinister presence.

FINALLY!

I have found a new horror film that is actually good!

It's not a film that relies on gore or cheap jump scares but plays with your mind. It's a sad story and, excluding the paranormal parts of it, one that probably happens a lot to families. The two leads are just fantastic in their roles of a mother and son torn apart by tragedy. 

This is a film that will make you care but also scare the absolute crap out of you. It's lack of too much CGI is highly effective and I love how you never really see 'The Babadook'. It really plays into the whole, was it real or all in their heads business? 

Many horror films go for the whole 'creepy' child thing and at the start you do think this is going to go the same way, but it's all about the mother and her struggles that grips you.

 My only negative about this film is I felt some of the supporting characters really had no point being there. We got introduced to them then just nothing from them again. It seemed a little odd. Also sadly the climax of the film was a little bit lost and lacking a 'bang' as such but it is very emotional. 

I don't want to give too much away about this film as I really think you should all watch it. It's haunting and will really make you think for days after. 

(also you may never look at a coat hanging up in the way same way ever again)

28 Days Later

• Year Released:  2002
• Director: Danny Boyle
• Starring: Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, Brendan Gleeson

A group of animal activists break into a laboratory in the hope of saving chimpanzees that are being experimented on but it all goes wrong. Twenty eight days later, Jim wakes up in a coma to find that London is deserted and a virus that causes rage has infected almost everyone. 

  Zombie films are everywhere. From the classics like Night of The Living Dead to the highly popular The Walking Dead, it seems like we are a little obsessed with the idea. This could really be counted as a zombie flick but we aren't dealing with the usual slow walking, rotting, brain eating kind here. This type are faster and much more vicious. 

Like a lot of apocalyptic films, as well as shocking you with gore and fear, it also goes into how humans could cope with a situation like this. Sometimes that can be the scariest thing.

Cillian Murphy's character is a prime example of this. He finds him self thrust into this new world but still tries to keep his humanity by helping a family survive. However, even he succumbs to violence and ruthlessness to stay alive. 

 

This is one of my favourite films. Not just because Mr Murphy is in the buff at the start......

 

It's gruesome but not in a pointless shocking manner. It has it's jumpy scenes but it's the fear of 'what if' that is truly scary about this film. Again like Babadook, it starts to lose itself a little at the end but it's still a great film that hooks you from start to finish!

 

 So there you!

Perceptions on Mental Health

Hello there.

Okay, so this post is going to be very different to anything I have done before. Quite frankly, I'm very hesitant to even write this but after the events on Sunday night, I feel I must get things off my chest. I'm going to try my best to keep it short and not ramble.

As some of you may have seen a well known company featured a pillow that contained the words

"I can't keep calm and carry on because I have an anxiety disorder"

Now you will notice that I haven't actually mentioned the company in question or showed you said item, the reason being is that I don't feel that's what is important in discussing this. You see I am finding this to be a recurring theme with companies at the moment. There seems to be this odd obsession with clothing companies mocking mental health problems or, even weirder, trying to make them fashionable.

From tshirts with the word 'depression' and 'eat less' printed all over them to cards that say 'don't get mad, take lithium. 

I appreciate that some people will not be offended by these statements. Infact, good on you for not letting it get to you (I wish it hadn't upset me) but you cannot ignore the problems these products bring up. 

In the UK, a statistic from the Mental Health Foundation, shows that a quarter of the population will experience a mental health problem in the course of a year. Anxiety and depression being the most common. So why is there still this stigma and lack of understating about these problems.

Why does society seem to treat mental health problems differently from, say a, psychical illness?

Why does it come so easy to some people to laugh and call someone 'crazy' or 'mental'?

We wouldn't think it was right to have a t-shirt mocking someone with diabetes or cancer. So when did it become acceptable to openly mock and make light of someone's mental health.

As someone who has suffered and still does with mental health concerns stuff like this gives me absolute mix of emotions. It angers me, it saddens me and it also makes me feel ashamed. Too many people are scared to talk about how they are feeling and I feel like stuff like this just does not help. It's making light (and money) off of someone's suffering. That is just not right and needs to stop.

You may say I am overreacting and that it's just a silly product... but it's what it represents is the problem. A lack of understanding and awareness.

From someone who suffers from an anxiety disorder, I no way think my illness is 'cute', 'cool', 'quirky' or 'fun' but for some reason, the pillow that I am talking about, tried to make it look like that.

Being too upset and scared to leave your house is not fun.

Panicking over the thought of having a panic attack is not cute.

Worrying and over thinking everything all day long is not cool. 

Crying because something isn't 'perfect' is not quirky.

So can some people please stop treating it like it's just a funny little part of someone's personality. Trust me, it's something I don't wish on anyone.

  I'm not saying I am expert on this matter or because I feel this way, you should too. I would hope one thing we can all agree on is this belittling of Mental Health Illnesses is not right and needs to stop.

Sorry if I am rambling on this. It's not a post that is coming easy to me at all but I felt it was important for me to do.

 Next year, I will be running the Kilomathon for SAMH (Scottish Association For Mental Health). I want to try raise awareness and show others who are going through stuff like this that they shouldn't feel ashamed.

OOTD: Pumpkin Carving and The Coven

Hello!

So as you all are probably aware by now, my blog this month has been very Halloween based. I am just loving all things spooky and scary.

Today I did something that I have never ever done before

I was recently re watching 'The Coven' season of American Horror Story and clearly was taking my inspiration from that! To be fair, I am a girl that just loves wearing all black. I just feel much more comfortable in it. Plus being the moody cow that I am, I can't imagine I suit bright colours.

Now onto how my pumpkin carving went!

As you can see by my face in the middle picture, I was not having too much fun scraping out all of the pumpkin guts!

I was pretty happy with the end product though! 

Mine is the little one with the creepy smile. Sam clearly did a better job than me and he ended up doing some of the carving on mine. I'm generally a little bit useless when it comes to fiddly things!

I'm not sure if I could do any better than that but I think they look awesome. I wish I had decorated the whole flat now.

Online No One Can Hear You Scream: Week Three

Hello again!

Sorry for the lateness of this post!

So this is the third post in my 'Horror Film Marathon' for October and for this one I did it a little different. Instead of watching films throughout the week, I had a little movie night with the family. 

It ended up in drinking very strong cocktails and laughing at the ridiculousness of these films but 

hey ho!

When I got to my parents' house, I found they had proper decorated the living room so it was all spooky. This is why my family are the best really. They share my love for going all out with a theme!

So before my little reviews, here are some pictures of how our night look:

You can't beat good old ASDA and Poundland for awesome Halloween decorations. I'm actually gutted that I'm not having my own party this year. I long to make my flat look mega creepy!

So onto the films we watched:

The Exorcist 

•  Year Released: 1973
• Director: William Friedkin
• Starring: Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller, Linda Blair

I think most people know the deal with this film:

A movie actress finds herself growing increasingly worried about her young daughter's peculiar behavior. Eventually she seeks the help of a priest who comes to the conclusion that she is possessed and the only way to save her is through an exorcism.   

This film is a classic. Everyone knows it and if you are a horror film it is a must see. 

It came out in the 70's and brought along with it a lot of controversy. These days it's hardly the most shocking movie around but back then I can see why it ruffled a few feathers. A lot of it comes down to the age of Linda Blair, who was only around 14 at the time. From the language to the erm, crucifix scene, even now it's still pretty disturbing. 

But is it as great as everyone bangs on about?

Honestly, I don't think so. Now to be fair I was a little 'tipsy' from said strong cocktails whilst watching it but I found my interest in most of the film going. It a slow starter that's for sure!

I think the main problem with the film is just the hype that surrounds it. The stories of people running out of the cinema, being sick etc. Anything that built up will always end up a disappointment. 

 I guess it says something about this generation that a film like this is just not shocking anymore. Almost like Clockwork Orange in a way.

Still, it is a classic and I can't believe it took me this long to actually watch it. Do I think it's the best horror film out there? No, but it's one that we all should watch at least once.

Event Horizon

 So here is the deal with Event Horizon:

In the year 2047, a rescue ship by the name of 'Lewis and Clark' answers a transmission from the 'Event Horizon' which has been missing for seven years. After boarding the long lost ship they soon realise it's been to somewhere it shouldn't have and has brought something evil back with it. 

As you all learned with my Alien review, I am a big fan of the sc-fi/horror genre. It's just something about how claustrophobic they are that sends shivers down my spine. Event Horizon is not an amazing film by any means. It, to be honest, brings nothing new to the genre at all but it's pretty darn enjoyable. You may search up on it on Rotten Tomatoes after reading this and think 
"It's only got 24% rating, how could it be good" 
But look at the audience rating, it's 62%. So don't write it completely off. 

It's dated sure but it has a rather good cast and a creepy story. It's a little on the gory side but not enough to put me totally off. The film is very in your face and you don't really care about the characters at all but I found myself intrigued by it. Unlike The Exorcist, I didn't lose interest in it You may want to look away but you just can't. Plus Sam Neill (Jurassic Park man) is a right creepy bastard in it. 

If you want to watch something where you can just switch your brain off and enjoy a little space scariness, then this is the film for you!


Mama

  So here is a little about the story of 'Mama':

 

After killing his wife, Jeffrey D'Asange kidnaps his two young daughter and takes them to a cabin in the wood. He plans to kill them too but they are saved by an unseen force that dwells in the cabin. Five years later, the girls are found and left in the care of Jeffrey's twin brother and his girlfriend Annabel. They soon come to realise that they have brought 'Mama' with them.

 

Even now as I write 'Mama', I'm still getting that line from Bohemian Rhapsody in my head (you know the one)

I was excited for this film, I had heard so many good things about it. Plus it has Guillermo del Toro as the executive producer, so it has to be good right?! 

Well.... it wasn't a winner for me sadly. Don't get me wrong the story is fantastic and really interesting but it didn't feel like a horror film to me. I found myself not jumping at all or trying to watch through my hands. My mum and Corrin were both jumping throughout this film but for me, it just wasn't working.

I think the main problem for me is the fact that the 'villian' is CGI. If it was an actual actor in makeup, I may had found it scarier. but it was so obviously computerized! Plus you saw far too much of it, especially at the end. It almost become laughable for me.

Personally, I was just so disappointed with it. The trailer looked so creepy but I just felt that lacking in the actual film (may of had something to do with my slightly intoxicated state but shh)

I also watched Aliens that night but I didn't see much point in talking about it on this. You all know by now that I love the Alien series!
