A Night At The Basement

Hello!

Mexican food is something I have only started to get into over the last couple of years. I've spent many a lunch break with a tasty chicken burrito. We have a wonderful relationship together..

When I found out I was getting to head to The Basement to try out their brand new menu, I was pretty excited. One, because I of my new love for Mexican cuisine and two, I've enjoyed several drinks in The Basement in the past but had never tried out their food.
Tucked away on Broughton Street, The Basement is an awesome cantina style bar and restaurant. Specialising in street food style good, I couldn't wait to get myself ready for a Mexican feast!

The Starters

Rump Steak Tacos

Guacamole

To kick off our meal, we decided to try out the Rump Steak Tacos which is served with tomato and chilli jam, Monterey Jack cheese. As I said, I am normally a burrito kind of gal but I may be converting to tacos after these bad boys. The steak was cooked to perfection and the chilli jam was beyond delicious. The fact both tacos dispersed from our plate very quickly, I would say it was a success!

To go along with our tacos, we had to of course give the Guacamole a try. In the Basement they actually make your guacamole right there in front of you. I am so into this idea seeing as I am actually not an onion fan and too often I find myself picking out that awful veg when I order this avocado-based dip. It was full of flavour and I may have made sure the bowl was completely empty. No bit of guacamole was wasted!

The Mains

Veracuza Baked Cod
Char-grilled Chicken Fajitas

I don't think I was mentally prepared for how large my main dish would be. It does come under the large plate section so really I should have put two and two together. The Veracuza Baked Cod which is cod fillet, tomato chilli and lime sauce, black olive, capers and green rice, was a beast of a dish, for good reasons. The fish was wonderful as was the green rice but alas the tomato chilli and lime sauce wasn't my favourite. To be honest I think it was just the lime flavour that didn't agree with me.

Sam, the other half in my life, went for the classic chicken fajitas. Being the sneaky girl that I am, I of course pinched a few strips of the chicken. As much as the cod was delicious, next time I am going for the chicken. It was just so tasty and was served with peppers, flour tortillas, Monterey Jack, crema, salsa and guacamole.

The Desserts

Mayan Chocolate Tart

Cornmeal Coconut Cake

I've said it once and I will say it again, you can always judge a place on how good it really is with the desserts and the Basement did well. I of course went for the Mayan Chocolate Tart which was so rich and creamy but not in the way that left you feeling sick. I wasn't again a big fan of the lime crème, which is making me think I just don't like the taste of lime.

I really wanted to have a bite of Sam's coconut cake but when I decided to take the plunge and stick my fork in it, it was long gone. Always the sign of a good take to be honest.

Throughout the whole night, the staff made sure to check how every was and always making sure I had a drink in front of me. Sometimes that can feel a bit too much but there is a really lovely laid back and chilled vibe in the Basement which made me feel really welcome.

Overall the food was delicious but by the end of it we were both feeling pretty darn full. Next time we may stick with ordering a few of the small plates or just going for large ones each.

I also, regrettably, didn't have any shots of tequila minus the was in my margarita cocktail. So even more of an excuse to head back and maybe even try on of their tequila flights!

Massive thank you The Basement* for having me along and expect to see me again very soon!

Till the next time!

  3. A great review of this restaurant. I consider this place as one of best Chicago event venues. Whenever I visit there, always have an excellent experience. Their services are wonderful and to be precise, I haven’t seen such a great restaurant off lately.
